Your Winter Booklist: The Best New Reads to Cozy Up With
Winter is definitely in full swing (as I’m writing this, it’s been a week full of -16 degree mornings!), and there’s nothing better than cozying up with a good book when the weather outside only makes you want to stay inside. No matter what genre is your fav, 2025 has already delivered some incredible reads.
If you’re ready to escape into a new story, here are the must-reads (according to me) that you need to grab this winter. Plus, I’m dropping some of my favorite local booksellers to shop these titles (and you might even discover a new favorite spot in the process!).
“The Favorites" by Layne Fargo
Already out!
An epic love story set in the cutthroat world of Olympic figure skating, this novel follows the rise and fall of a legendary ice-dancing duo. Scandal, obsession, and a ten-year mystery collide as Katarina Shaw finally tells her side of the story.
Why I love it: This was one of the first books I read this year, and OMG, I am obsessed. It’s dramatic, intense, and full of twists that kept me hooked right until the last page. I’m officially calling it one of my favorite books ever, and I can’t recommend it enough - especially if you’re into Taylor Jenkins Reid’s stories (seriously, verrrry similar vibe!). Side note: I listened to the audiobook, and it was incredible. With over 20 narrators, every character, interviewer, etc had their own distinct voice, which fit the story’s format perfectly. Easily one of the best audiobook experiences I’ve ever had!
"Onyx Storm" by Rebecca Yarros
Already out!
The stakes couldn’t be higher as Violet Sorrengail takes the fight beyond Basgiath War College, battling enemies both outside and within. With dragons, magic, and a storm of secrets threatening to unravel everything she’s fighting for, this third installment in the Empyrean series is an epic ride from start to finish.
Why you’ll love it: I absolutely loved Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, and I’ve been so excited to see where we pick up after that insane cliffhanger. I’ve seen sooo many fan theories, and my mind is spinning. Right now, I’m in the process of rereading the first two books so everything’s fresh when I finally dive into Onyx Storm! If you’re reading it too, please let me know - I need someone to debrief with when I’m done!
"The Three Lives of Cate Kay" by Genevieve Carter
Already out!
Cate Kay is one of the most successful authors of her generation - except Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. In this dazzling debut, secrets unravel as a bestselling author finally decides to confess her true identity, taking us on a journey of ambition, tragedy, and redemption. Part The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and part First Lie Wins, this novel is a stunning exploration of the stories we tell the world - and ourselves.
Why you’ll love it: This book was Reese’s Book Club pick for January, and let’s be real - Reese has impeccable taste, so I had a feeling I’d love it. It’s a story within a story, seamlessly weaving between timelines and character perspectives. By the end, it truly felt like I had read Cate Kay’s actual memoir - deep, emotional, and full of secrets waiting to be uncovered.
"A Sea of Unspoken Things" by Adrienne Young
Already out!
When James Golden’s twin brother, Johnny, dies in a tragic accident, she’s left to confront not only their unique bond but the secrets he left behind. Set in the eerie, secluded town of Six Rivers, this atmospheric novel takes James on a journey through their haunted past as she uncovers shocking truths about her brother - and herself.
Why I love it: Adrienne Young is a master at crafting rich, atmospheric stories, and this one absolutely lived up to the hype. The mystery was just complex enough that you could follow along, but not too complex that you couldn’t keep up with all of the characters and timelines. It was a perfect story, easily digestible - and so beautifully written!
"Beautiful Ugly" by Alice Feeney
Already out!
From the Queen of Twists, Alice Feeney, comes a dark, gripping thriller about love, betrayal, and revenge. When author Grady Green’s wife disappears under mysterious circumstances, his life unravels. A year later, on a remote Scottish island, he sees the unthinkable - a woman who looks just like his missing wife.
Why I love it: I haven’t read this one yet, but it’s Alice Feeney, so you know the twists are going to be good. I love her other books I have read, like Rock Paper Scissors and Daisy Darker. Plus, the mix of psychological suspense and a darkly atmospheric setting has me hooked already. It’s giving major Gone Girl energy, and I can’t wait to find out how this story plays out.
“Show Don’t Tell" by Curtis Sittenfeld
Out on Feb 25!
In this brilliant collection of short stories, Curtis Sittenfeld explores marriage, fame, friendship, and ambition with her trademark wit and insight. From revisiting Lee Fiora, the beloved protagonist of Prep, to thought-provoking tales about creative projects and post-divorce friendships, Show Don’t Tell is a dazzling look at the moments that upend our lives and reshape our beliefs.
Why you’ll love it: Curtis Sittenfeld is one of my all-time favorite authors, and her books have been with me through so many moments in my life. I remember reading Prep the summer before my transition from middle school to high school, and just last year, I devoured Romantic Comedy. I can’t wait to dive into this collection, reconnect with some familiar characters, and enjoy a fresh set of stories from an author who always seems to get it just right.
